Cold Spoon Frozen Yogurt

While it has only been several months since the Red Mango and White Hat craze has taken over Manila, frozen yogurt has been Pampanga’s well-kept secret for almost two years now. Tucked in the outskirts of Angeles City in Pampanga, in a district called Koreatown, Cold Spoon is a small, Korean-owned frozen yogurt shop, complete with its own innovative drive-thru service. As if Angeles City is not already somewhat foreign and distant to most Manila-based folks, finding Cold Spoon is quite literally like locating an igloo in the Philippines. And when we say that the comparison is literal, we are not trying to be humorous, because Cold Spoon is a white structure with an igloo-inspired arched entrance.

Plain, Choco Chip, Strawberries and Oreos 

The approach to ordering yogurt here is exactly the same as it is in Red Mango, White Hat, Fro-Yo or California Berry. After deciding whether one has the stomach capacity to consume a small, medium or large serving of yogurt, selecting the different toppings to sprinkle over the yogurt is next. However, unlike in the more popular yogurt shops in Manila where prices are based on the number of toppings chosen, Cold Spoon’s toppings are categorized into different groups. Syrups and cereals are 15 Pesos; chocolate chips, cookies and candies are 20 Pesos; fruits are 25 Pesos. It would be a misconception though to think that Cold Spoon is more expensive than most Manila yogurt shops because of its stratified pricing strategy, because toppings here are fresh and distributed so generously that finding an entire Oreo cookie in your yogurt cup or having strawberries overflowing from your cup is not an impossibility.

 

Inside Cold Spoon

Cold Spoon is proof that not all yogurts are created equal. Comparing the yogurt shops in Manila alone, one would notice that Lulubelle’s yogurt is icy and almost sorbet-like in texture, while Fro-Yo’s melts almost instantaneously, and Yoswirl’s tastes like ordinary ice cream. Cold Spoon’s yogurt on the other hand is rich and creamy, without being too sweet and ice-cream-like. It has hints of sweetness and sourness, with neither taste battling or overpowering the other. But what sets Cold Spoon apart from the rest is that it does not melt. Well naturally it has to melt at one point, but at least not within five minutes of it being handed to you. The yogurt is dense and chilled well so that you can sit back, relax, and actually savor the contents of your cup without having to worry about sipping warm yogurt soup once you’ve reached the bottom of your cup.

In spite of its distance and its location being in the middle of nowhere, we must admit that Cold Spoon is the best source of frozen yogurt anywhere near Manila. With its creamy texture and nice mix of sweetness and sourness, Cold Spoon’s frozen yogurt is definitely worth the half-tank of gas and the two-hour drive from Manila. And be sure to have a good laugh when you pass the Europe-inspired residential developments, where you will feel like you are in Europe, “except for the climate”.
